The California Wine Club is a superb example of how a
wine club enriches it's member's lives.
The California Wine Club has been in operation since 1990. Bruce and Pam Boring
began this wine-of-the-month club in Ventura, California. They couldn’t find the
kind of wine they wanted, and they wanted the California Wine Club to be like a
friend suggesting a wine to another friend. They personally chose every wine
they have by going to wineries, getting to know the families and winemakers, and
getting two of their best bottles. Their club has grown to include thousands of
members.
They like to deal with smaller wineries because they are more concerned about
the art of winemaking than making money. These farmers have limited distribution
systems so the California Wine Club allows their wines to reach a wider
audience. These wineries can be from Napa, Sonoma, Temecula, and Santa Barbara.
People all over the country get to experience the legendary California wines.
Other winemakers the California Wine Club deals with are from other professions
such as doctors, gold dealers, investment bankers, professors, and lawyers. They
have even dealt with famous winemakers such as the Smothers Brothers--Dick and
Tommy. The Borings have found that many winery owners came to winemaking as a
second career as opposed to the family businesses more prevalent in Europe.
The customers of California Wine Club can choose whatever wines they like such
as red or white, and they get a an eight-page newsletter called “Uncorked” with
every shipment. Discounts may be available on reorders, and there are gift and
corporate programs. Customers can order gifts for one to twelve months, and the
club will provide a customized gift card with the shipment. They also have a
Signature Series of “reserve” wines. Customers can cancel, and the club will
refund or replace a shipment if it’s found unsatisfactory. People don’t have to
go to California to get the full wine experience.
