Sparkling wine : An excellent bubbling experience for cherished moments

Wines with bubbles are considered as the best exclusive companion for celebration or auspicious occasions. There are different other names like English call it the Sparkling wine and Italians know it as Spumante whereas the Germans call it Sekt. Different names may be, but the enjoyment is the same, accompanied with sparkling wines on cherished occasions as special extravagances.

Though France has been a leading producer of sparkling wines that are grown and produced in its district of Champagne so "champagne" has become another name of sparkling wines, but other European countries are also becoming aware of this bubbly trend. Even California, New York, Australia has started their own production of sparkles in wines to create a bubbling experience for wine lovers.

Sparkling wines are now just not enjoyed at the times of the weddings or festivities; anything good and happy can get the corks popping and wine flowing. People are getting acquainted with these wines and thus, the demand of such wine is rapidly on the rise. People pf California has topped the list for celebrating more often and enjoying the taste of something bubbly with consumption around 2.67 million cases, followed by Illinois in second place with consumption around 1.50 million cases.

Still wine usually don’t have bubble or sparkles in them, hence the production of Sparkling wine is also as interesting as the wine itself. Earliest success in producing bubbles in the wine was achieved in the French district, when Champagne was produced. Many low grade producers tried to copy it but all failed. Production of sparkling wine involves certain specialized steps that need to be followed under strict conditions and standards to obtain finest wines.

There has been much advancement in the traditional method of producing sparkling wine but the basics of the whole procedure are still the same. Traditional method begins with the grape’s harvesting, then picking of the grapes at the time when the sugar would be low and then immediate pressing of the grapes by passing it through the crusher to avoid oxidation of wine and to determine the color of the wine.

Next step for the production of Sparkling wine is the preliminary fermentation of the grapes which is normally done in stainless steel containers but can also be done in concrete or redwood tanks. It’s continued for almost 3 weeks till all natural sugar is converted to alcohol. This wine is used as the base wine. A “triage,” a blend of base wine, yeast nutrient and a sugar source, is added to the base wine and fermented for second time. It then passes through various phases including riddling chores that produces bubbles, till the final wine is bottled.

While the automation and advanced techniques has changed the wine making nowadays, it has increased the product consistency from bottle to bottle too. Whether riddled by hand or machine, in the end it’s important to obtain the sparkling wine that’s the finest in taste and texture. Quality of sparkling wine is judged by the size of the bubbles, smaller the better and also according to the persistence of bubbled, long lasting is better and also how well they are integrated into the wine giving it perfect smoothness.

Sparkling wines can be categorized as very dry, dry (Brut), and slightly sweet to sweet. Many sparkling wines are also keyed out as “Blanc de Blancs” that are made from white grapes, or “Blanc de Noirs” that are produced from red grapes. For enjoying sparkling wines its also important to select good glassware to emphasize the bubbles properly, its enjoyed best when its chilled, even uncorking the bottles need to be done with care and also resealing of the bottle needs proper consideration.
