Wine label: An information note of wines that tells
all (almost)
Wine label is considered as the mirror of the wine, which shows the real picture
of wine through all the information that allows the wine enthusiasts to
understand the character of the wine and help them to pick fine wines for their
collection or enjoyment. Wine labels could range from being highly informative
to just bare minimum information depending upon the region of the wines or the
region where they are packed as each country has its own rules and regulations
regarding the writings on the labels.
Though different rules and regulations are followed in different countries
regarding the wine labels, yet more or less the rules are same. After the
designing process of the appropriate or catchy wine label, it then has to be
passed by the respective government agencies that will scrutinize several
mandatory items like in US most of the wine labels must say “contains sulfites”
even though sulfites are present in everyday food too.
Many wine bottles have two wine labels, one in the front and other at the back
of the bottle. The front label contains the basic information about the wine,
which is meant to catch the eye of the viewer instantly, whereas the wine label
at the back provides certain helpful information about the wine like how’s the
taste of the wine with foods? Or what’s the grade of acidity of the wine? The
year of manufacturing of wine is also a must to be mentioned in the labeling, as
it decides how good and how long the wine will go for aging.
A typical wine label for a US wine contain information about the grape variety
like red or white and wine must contain at least 75% of the grape names, whereas
certain wines also contain 100%, next important thing sought out by the wine
seekers is the brand name or name of the winery. Other things are the wine type
like table wine, dessert wine or sparkling wine, information about the vintage
year, wine region and vineyards, alcohol content also needs to be mentioned
along with the net contents of the bottle.
Wine label also includes winemaking information and name and address of the
bottler, and government warning also must be presented on the label. A French
wine label on the other hand includes mostly the same information like the name
of the vineyard, vintage year, alcoholic strength, the company producing the
wine, where the wine is bottled, guarantee of origin and appellation
information.
German wine label includes the same information as mentioned on the US wine
label but some German wine labels also show ripeness level and "Trocken" ("Dry")
or "Halbtrocken" ("Half Dry") to denote wines fermented to less natural
sweetness, other information is included on the back label. Spain’s wine label
contains only the information regarding the wine maker or wineries, Appellation,
Vintage year and other required information like government warning. Italian
wine label also includes the information about the wineries, Appellation,
vintage year and information about the estate where the wine is bottled.
California wine labels are packed with all the useful information like other
wines that will give you a better idea of what to expect in the bottle, whether
you are looking for a rich, buttery Chardonnay to enjoy or a peppery Zinfandel
to perk up your steak au poivre. Simplicity is the elegant part of designing,
hence it should be applicable to wine label designing too. It should be simple
enough so that any body can easily understand it and could obtain all the
desired information required for choosing that particular wine. Wine labels can
also carry small print disclosing the approximate alcoholic content of wine and
the size of the bottle.
