Bordeaux wine : an essence of richness and grace


Bordeaux wine origin from Bordeaux region which has diverse geography, soil, weather and different wine making customs so the region produces a wide range of excellent wines as red wines, dry and sweet, whites, rosי, clairet, and a sparkling wine called Crיmant de Bordeaux. Haut-Medoc, which is situated in the northwest of the city of Bordeaux, the marshiest area, produces some of the best Bordeaux wines in the world, especially those from the Medoc, Saint- Emilion and also the famous sauternes districts.

The richness and elegance of Bordeaux wine is because of delicate blending of the different varieties of grapes, hard work of manufacturers and the deep research by the wine-scientist and technicians. It offers all type of wines as sophisticated wines, refreshing wines, aged wines or young wines. Most interesting fact about the Bordeaux wines is that, you will consume just 50 calories in 2.4 ounce of Bordeaux wine, not more than an apple.

No single inclusive classification system can rank 57 appellations of Bordeaux wine in a single listing. Several Bordeaux appellations such as  Sauternes & Barsac, Graves and Saint-Emilion have been classified according consistent quality, wine-growing expertise, production levels and actual taste of wines.

The 57 appellations of Bordeaux wine are generally divided into four red and two white families. First family of Bordeaux wine is of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Superior; they are young, light and restorative. Rose and clairet wines also come into this family.

Second member of the Bordeaux wine family are light- to medium-bodied wines--Cotes De Bordeaux; names derived from the rivers Garonne and the Dordogne. Most important quality of this wine is that it gets matured quickly. Some of the important Cotes appellations are Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux, Cotes de Bourg etc.

Another family member of Bordeaux wine is the St-Emilion, Pomerol, Fronsac. Libournais wines are softer and fruitier than Mיdoc and Graves wines. Some of its appellations include Saint-Emilion, Montagne-saint-Emilion and many more. World-famous golden sweet white Bordeaux wines can be both medium and full bodied but are only produced in a very small quantity, mainly in Sauternes and Barsac.

In order to make Bordeaux wine, different varieties of grapes are used, which are harvested separately to create desired result such as to make red Bordeaux; Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc are used, white wines are made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle grapes and Golden sweet Bordeaux wine made from the Sיmillon with some Sauvignon Blanc.

Be a smart buyer while buying Bordeaux wines and conduct a research as is the wine has to drunk right now, buying for a particular meal, if it’s young let it age, a list of Bordeaux wines for price comparison etc. Usually all Bordeaux wines comes with label “chateau” which is an order of quality for Bordeaux wines. Appellation d'Origine Contrפlיe (A.O.C.) is a strict set of French laws to specify wines by geographical origin and minimum production conditions.

Red Bordeaux wine is excellent with beef, lamb, grilled veal and poultry such as grilled turkey.
Good sweet Bordeaux wine is a perfect accompaniment to fruit-based desserts, roasted white meats and blue cheese. Some recommended cheeses are Camembert, Brie and Roquefort. Dry whites are perfect with sea-food and chicken.
