Disposable wine glasses : when to use them and how to
make the best of them
Wine, it is said, takes on the character of the utensil holding it. That is
why, the world's best wine glasses don't come cheap. In order to get the wine to
give out its famed aromas, individually, you need crystal glasses with a stem
and a base, and there are codes of etiquette
that dictate how to handle those glasses. But when you are on an outing, and are
yearning to gulp down a sip or two of your favorite wine, then it would be
impractical to expect being served in those expensive pieces. Its the
down-to-earth, disposable wine glass that comes to serve you. All that you have
to do with these disposable wine glasses is to throw them away once the party is
over.
Any outing, picnic, party with lots of guests, even a wedding, requires wine to
be passed around. It would be wrong to expect your expensive glassware to be
properly handled and looked after. And, if you are the host, you would rather
enjoy the event, than keep a furtive eye on each and every single piece of
glassware being handed around by the rogue mob in the party mood! Disposable
wine glasses are a natural solution in such situations.
Disposable wine glasses are usually made from polystyrene. They are now
manufactured in one piece
(that is, no joints / seams anywhere), and come in different capacities. Quite a
few manufacturers have started offering such glasses with a stem and a base in
the market. Now this is definitely an improvement over the non-stemmed variety.
While holding a non-stemmed glass, you perforce hold it by the bowl, and this
results in the warmth of the hands percolating to the wine. The wine begins to
react to this heat and there is a distinct change in the taste and
aroma after some time.
It is best to serve wine half-full in a disposable wine glass. This allows the
wine to breathe, and by the time the guest starts sipping it, enough aroma would
have started permeating in the small air pocket that forms between the edge of
the glass and the surface of the liquid. This
simple trick more than makes up for the glass not being made of crystal - at
least, you get to enjoy the aroma!
Disposable wine glasses come in packs of ten, costing anywhere between two to
three US dollars each. The usual size is 180 ml. Now all that you have to do, is
to start pouring! Let the party begin!
