Food and chardonnay pairings - a stairway to heaven..
There are few things quite as personal as tastes. And when it comes to food
and chardonnay pairings, there are very contrasting opinions on which pair works
out the best on the palate! A good food and chardonnay pairing can do wonders to
any gathering - a bland party can become a great party if you click the
combination right!
The taste that a glass of Chardonnay can acquire will depend on the origin of
the grape and its method of fermentation. The wine can taste heady, or it can be
light; it can taste slightly sweetish, and in contrast, it can be slightly
sour. It is this diversity in taste that Chardonnay brings to the table,
that makes food and chardonnay pairings quite a challenge.
Chardonnay's popular flavours include raw or baked apple, pear, lemon-lime,pineapple
and tropical fruit. If the fermentation was carried out in barrel and aged in
oak, then Chardonnay's variety expands further to include butter
and butterscotch, toast and fig, even clove and nutmegs and hazelnut.
Of course, the vanilla flavour too has its own set of admirers.
A food and chardonnay pairing that can never be overlooked is Cheese with the
white wine. Cheese is invariably the main snack at wine parties. The reason is
not hard to seek. For one, cheese has its own way to smoothen the wine on the
tongue, as it goes easy on the tongue. Since both require a unique degree of
ageing and care, both tend to bring out the best of flavours in each other.
For the first course, a very strongly recommended food and chardonnay pairing is
smoked salmon with New Zealand Chardonnay. Gravlax is highly suggested, too. The
California Chardonnay goes quite well with fish-based risotto. Afficionados
alsoswear by a glass of this particular variety along with Cod, Halibut, grilled
Salmons, and Swordfish. Grilled tuna along with a sip of Chardonnay is
guaranteed to take one to the seventh heavens...
For wine-lovers and hardcore carnivores, duck with fruit glaze or sauce gets top
billing as a food pair with chardonnay. For people who would like to settle down
with salad, a mouthful of caesar goes quite well with the drink.
There are no rigid rules about how food and chardonnay pairings should or should
not be handled for any wine party - but the basic point that should be kept in
mind, is that the taste of the food should not overwhelm the taste of the wine,
and vice-versa. And a perfection on this rule of life comes only with practice,
and further practice.
