Iron and wine : The timeless owing musical debt to
earlier music periods
Iron and wine…! The musical sense of timeless deja vu and stage name given to
the famous traditional folksinger Samuel Beam! He was born in South Carolina but
is a native/ resident of Miami, Florida. Sam used to teach cinematography at a
local college and was signed by Sub pop, of all labels. The incident happened
when Iron and wine was releasing certain low profile tapes which caught the
attention of Jonathon Poneman, who asked Samuel Beam to send his materials to
the label for submission. And that was the beginning of a huge album--Iron and
wine.
Jonathon Poneman released the two Cds after trimmings but one with the name of
The Creek Drank the Cradle with 12 songs picked from the full album of Iron and
Wine. Iron and wine is written, produced and performed by Samuel Beam and it
features his voice only along with gently strummed acoustic guitar, even bit of
slide guitar and occasionally played banjo too. This album is filled with
hushed, retrained vocals that explore relationships and hopes born from them or
you can say it’s the music for wilderness enthusiasts everywhere.
The Creek Drank the Cradle is the debut album of Iron and wine consists of
melodious tracks that includes Lion’s Mane, Bird Stealing Bread, Faded from the
winter, Promising light, Rooster moans, Upward over the mountain, Southern
Anthem, Angry blade, Weary memory, Promise that you will and Muddy Hymnal. All
these tracks have certain special characteristics attached to them that paint
clear pictures with the tunes. The Creek Drank the Cradle is considered as an
updated ode of the old Appalachian South, which is defined, by traditional
values and arcane manners.
Voice of Iron and wine is compared with people like Lou Barlow, Sebadoh as they
also have the same breathy voice and melancholic outlook towards life. Another
point that makes Beam’s music apart from the rest is the fact there is complete
absence of any punk rock or noise just for the sake of it. Sam is the one person
who doesn’t believe in hard rock and obstructing the beauty, which he can
signify with his simple songs. He embraces this beauty and shows his sadness
with his songs that are soft rock rather than punk rock.
Iron and wine’s record opened with Lion’s Mane, which truly takes the breath
away of the listeners with beautiful voice of Sam Beam. The song “Love is a
tired symphony you hum when you're awake/ Love is a crying baby mama warned you
not to shake” shows his delicate voice with hushed vocals that gets the
attention instantly and this song is kind of a love symphony.
All through the album, slide guitar, banjo appears and gives an impression of
Nick Drake. The song of “Bird stealing Bread”, this impression is highly
predominant with Iron and wine’s voice sounding harmoniously angelic. Then comes
“Faded from the winter” that just emphasizes further on Beam’s perfect harmonies
but the changes keep coming too through out the album.
With the tracks likes “the Rooster moans”, where Beam talks of riding rusty
train, “Upward over the mountain” and “Southern anthem” that continues the
southern theme subtle sounds of layered banjo is brought out. “Weary memory” is
the simplest but strongest track of the album and all other tracks that follow
are just memorable.
