long and can be consumed fairly early. Yet the wine can keep its quality for a
year or two. The merlot grape makes a wine that has a full body. The popularity
of merlot wine has grown. The most popular merlot are dark, rich, and strong.
The wine has smells of plums, black cherry, toffee, chocolate, violets, orange
and tea. Depending on its origin, merlot may have herbaceous smells besides the
berries and spices.

thought to help the heart. Merlot can cost as low as six to eleven dollars.
Sales of red wine have more than doubled over the last ten years. Merlot has
beaten cabernet sauvignon as the largest selling red varietal in the United
States. Merlot is similar to cabernet sauvignon in the dark berry and spicy
smells, but merlot is usually easier on the palate as it usually has less
tannins. Tannin dries out the tongue. It has been called the smoother, mellower
cousin of cabernet sauvignon. Cabernet usually takes five years to mature while
merlot takes about a year. Places that produce merlot are California, Australia,
Chile, South Africa, and Washington state. Merlot is also in the Bordeaux wines
of France, but it is harder for the United States to import this. In France,
merlot is used to soften the cabernet. That was merlot’s original purpose until
it came to be appreciated on its own. It has also been used in wines in Italy.
Merlot goes with different food such as fish, poultry, and meat.
Merlot grape is difficult to cultivate in the vineyard because it needs certain
soils. The grapes are picked when the sugar in a moderate stage. Merlot is also
prone to oxidation in the vat which means the colors are hard to maintain.
Despite these drawbacks, merlot wine has proven to be a leader in the red wine
field.
