Wine tasting party - a fun way to meet friends and
enjoy great wines.
One great way to bring like-minded, wine-loving friends together is to
organise wine tasting parties. Indeed, a wine tasting party brings out the best
of the party animal in human beings!
Unlike other parties, there is a specific objective of a wine tasting party ,and
therefore one needs to have uncommon things such as "paper" and "pencil" to be
used by the guests to make notes during the tasting sessions. A glass
of wine has its own unique appearance and aroma. Its aftertaste is going to be
different than the rest. These virtues, if not noted down on the spot, can get
confused with the next glass of wine that comes along.
A wine tasting party should ideally be organised around a central theme. These
could be anything - letting one's creative imagination soar is the key here.
Say, one region versus another, or a pick of one varietal from each region, or
several varietals of one type of wine banded together - the possibilities are
endless.
This brings an added angle of interest to the event, and may make the party
to be a talking point for days after!
While setting up the tables for the wine tasting party, add lots of support
foodstuff such as cheese, bread and fruit. Bland items such as unsalted matzos
and melba toast do not disturb those sensitive nerve ends on the tongue; but
act as separators between two sessions of wine tasting. Also, keep lots of water
around for sipping, as well as for rinsing the glasses.
The wines to be tasted should be collected a few days before the actual event.
The bottles require to be "rested", by placing them upright, so that the liquid
does not interact with the cork. Also, this allows the wine to stabilize
beforethe main event.
There is a natural sequence to the wine tasting process. Start with the lighter
variety - usually the white wines. Gradually move to the more robust ones.
Similarly, take on the dry wines before the sweet flavoured ones. This natural
progression would be an experience in itself for the guests, too, especially for
the uninitiated ones. Remember to chill the white ones slightly before opening.
Also, the red ones need to be decanted.
The main event of a wine tasting party is this - the actual tasting of the
liquid! Aerate the wine by swirling the glass a few times. Sniff the aroma. Take
a small sip. Roll the wine over the tongue for a few moments. Let the taste buds
tingle and make up their mind about the verdict to be given. Encourage the
guests to note down the verdict on a scale of 1 to 10. The guests may swallow
the wine, or they may spit it out in buckets kept handily nearby. This is
usually done so that the guests do not get intoxicated too much or too soon;
especially till the entire session is over...
Of course, after the entire suite of wines on offer has been processed thus;
comes the time for hors d'oeuvres to be passed around! Notes may be compared on
wine after
wine, and each wine appreciated for the joy it brought to the party!
