Wine tasting : How the experts do it, and how you can too.
Wine tasting is an art practiced for many years by experts. Learning how to
taste wine, the taster tastes thousands of wines, learning to distinguish
between different brands, and even between two almost similar wines that were
produced in the same winery. Wine tasting is indeed a difficult job that takes
many years to master. But you can learn in just a few moments how to be an
amateur wine taster, and impress your friend or spouse.
Before you go on with the wine tasting, it is important that you refrain from
sweet, sour, salty or hot foods and beverages. They might influence the taste.
If you are a smoker - don't smoke before the tasting, as you will surely deflect
the taste. The professionals even avoid wearing any perfume or colon prior to
tasting.
Wine tasting - the steps
So here it is - wine tasting 101. The first step in the process is pouring
the wine into the glass, or stemware. You should fill about one third of the
glass. this is important as the space lets the liquid "breath" and mix oxygen
into it. If the glass has a "leg", as it surely does in most wine cases, hold
the glass by the leg, to avoid heating the liquid.
Wine tasting step 2: look at the liquid. examine it's color and clarity
against a white background. Hold the glass straight at first, and look at the
circle of wine that is formed. A clear color suggests that the wine is good. a
non-clear color will suggest a sour wine. Now tilt the glass and examine the
ellipse of the liquid.
Wine tasting step 3: Now it's time to "open" the wine's taste. To do that,
simply move the glass in circular movement (careful not to spill). This will
allow the mixing of oxygen within the liquid, thus releasing its true taste.
You've seen it done by savvy winners in restaurants and parties. Now you know
why.
Wine tasting step 4: Time to bring one more player into the game - your nose.
After you performed several circular movements, the wine in your glass is ready
to be smelled. Just bring the stemware closer to your nose and inhale. The
smelling step is dome just like a dog smells it's food - a few short and small
sniffs - NOT a long inhale. It just works better this way.
Wine tasting Step 5: That it. You came to the mouth part, finally. Go ahead
and sip the wine. Mind you, wine is to be sipped and not drank. This is not a
soft drink, but a work of art many people worked for centuries to put together.
Enjoy!
